Welcome to ALIA Online, a place for connecting with others engaged in "Authentic Leadership in Action." The ALIA Institute began as the Shambhala Summer Institute, which has been convening annually in Nova Scotia, Canada, since 2001. The Institute's programs connect pioneering leaders with each other, and with the perspectives, tools, and practices needed to create the new systems of the future.

This space will evolve over time. We welcome your suggestions, feedback and, above all, your participation!

Hi Beth. Your story reminds me of when I first came across ALiA while I was living in Halifax. I was convinced there was a staff of 20 people running the show. Also, when I first went to the Summer Institute in 2007, I was convinced there were 3000…

Lunch in Halifax - seeing where it all happens!

Today, I had the good fortune to go to lunch with Susan in Halifax! I met Susan and other ALIA staffers including Karen and Cara Lynn at ALIA Europe last year. I grew up in Nova Scotia (Amherst actually!) and it was fun to connect with other Nova Scotian's in the middle of Europe at the ALIA gathering! I'm in Halifax for a few weeks - visiting friends and family. I also led a workshop here - Working with Polarity and Wholeness - that was great fun and you can read what people thought of the work… Continue

Follow-up to the Applied MIndfulness Conference

The third Applied Mindfulness Conference drew a small, but diverse group of professionals committed to infusing their work with mindfulness. Robert Birkenes, a senior US diplomat with USAID who served in
Baghdad, spoke about the increasing number of people he finds across the

federal government who are interested in using and promoting mindfulness to

look freshly at the way conflict situations are described. (Articles are

Applied Mindfulness Conference in Vermont

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to call attention to the Applied Mindfulness Conference in Vermont, July 22-25. I will be one of the facilitators for the program and will again engage people in linking the practice of meditation to listening, inquiry and dialogue.

Managing Attention, Your Primary Leadership Resource

By Susan Szpakowski Attention is one of our most valuable resources, and yet strangely we seldom pay attention to how we pay attention—unless we happen to be a meditator or a neuroscientist. These two perspectives, coming from East and West, are now beginning to “meet in the middle,” as Western meditators mature in their understanding and [...]
