Leadership for Sustainability: Land and Community

Am interested in sharing ideas with anyone who is interested in rural community sustainability. How do we enhance leadership in communities that respects people and the environment? No easy answers here, I realize, but it would be great to learn about what other people are doing.

For an idea of some of my thinking, I'll share an essay from the Daily Yonder, http://www.dailyyonder.com/youre-not-around-watershed-are-you/2009/...

First link I can think of: Transition Towns? Do you know them? Lots of interesting learning there!
Had hear the term before, I think, but didn't realize it was a group. A quick look at the website sparks my interest. Thanks!
Hi Timothy and Ria,

I recently learned about Transition Towns too, and sent the link of this youtube video to Susan Szpakowski. I feel it is an 'innovatively practical' approach to community engagement--and a powerful example of transformative action. The relevance to our conversations within in the ALIA Institute community is amplified by their use of local currencies (as piloted at this year's summer program) and social technologies such as Open Space.

Best to you,

Another resource I know a little about is the Natural Step. Is anyone else familiar with this network?

Mr Tim,
Sorry i was bit busy in last few weeks as i had to travel different parts of sri lanka to involve with leadership training program called Dreams and teams. This program is basically designed to develop leadership skills within young leaders and allow them to experience with the team that they have selected to perform.so this program is run by the British council and funded by the youth sports trust England.so i am a local tutor for this program and we were trained by our lead trainer Mr Lalith Gunarathne and i am delighted to say that he is the one who send me the link to be a member of your web site
so according to my point of view if we can develop the leadership skills within young children and give them a kind of respect for them and allow them to find the values of themselves we will be able to find lot of solutions for the burning issues like environmental pollution and conflicts. so i hope there you get a answer for your questions as well.
for example during last three weeks i had got a chance to go to two different places where they have been equally faced the terrible results of war in different forms, even though they were belong to different nationalities. so we witness the out come of this leadership program as a bridge to find a solution to make the small kids in these two nationalities to get together and build a beautiful nation together as one. so as a result of this we find that this will help us to bring north and east together. ANIL
Hello, Anil.

Is there a website that I can look at for the organization that has developed the training?

Thanks for your reply.

Anil,

Thanks for your reply. I also have been traveling a lot lately and am having a hard time keeping up.

Thanks also for sharing the website info about the dreams program. It is crucial that we engage youth in sustainability issues. It is their future, after all, and we need their input to build it better.

Best of luck in your work, and please keep me informed. I promise to do likewise.

Hi Tim

This is a great international conversation that you have started thanks. I enjoyed your story too

You might like to look in at www.kaitiakitanga.net which started in a small disadvantaged rainforest community in Whirinaki, Aotearoa NZ, now embracing other rural community programs here and intenationally. (check out www.lopezclt.org too) The Kaitiakitanga Network thrives on Systems Thinking, sharing information and growing relationships. It is not a legal organisation and does not even have a bank account. Everything is done by networking and leveraging win-win relationships.

Yes, leadership is fundamental to this kind of community development, and all our activity is rooted in the Tipu Ake Organic Leadership Model www.tipuake.org.nz which inspires us. You will see that as a wholistic model rooted in indigenous values, it encapsulates and amplifies thinking from Transition Towns, Natural Step and many other Leadership / management approaches.
There is some more backgound and application on the ALIA Complication and Complexity forum.

Amil - I like your points about growing proactive children with strong values - Tipu Ake came out of a school that was doing just that

Communities are my passion too, my day job bridges both the corporate and community spaces www.projectmanagement.co.nz

Looking forward to see how all this emerges

Regards
Peter
