Soliciting Your "Wicked Issues"
Glenda (Eoyang) and I will be in Nova Scotia the first week in March to co-facilitate a program on "Thriving in Uncertainty". To develop a context for the sessions, I would love to gather some stories about the kind of uncertainty and complexity you are living in.
What is a story of your most recent wicked issue? What are your own personal strategies for thriving in uncertainty? What are the burning questions you would carry into this conversation?

One of our senior executives at work will be leaving soon and we are not certain of who will be replacing him or how quickly. Our team is anxious to move forward with new initiatives, but the exiting leadership is reluctant to support something new. We are in limbo, but the deadlines of our new initiatives are pressing.

An ever occurring issue is 'racism' and how do you deal with it. The latest event was a disparaging joke aimed at Alaska Natives (Tlingets) and was a take-off on "Cash for Clunkers" program but was called "Cash for Tlingets" . . . Tlinget even though it starts with a "T" has a hard "C" sound to it.
It was aired last week, we received an email at our organization and convened a conversation in our offices with the general manager and staff of the radio station.
We then convened a larger conversation with the actual DJ's, the General Manager and staff in a larger conferende room and invited members of the minority community and Alaska Native groups to attend - about 35 people turned out.
We sat in circle, went around introduced ourselves and addressed the question "What one word describes what you would like to see accomplished today?"
A circle within the circle was convened of Alaska Natives with the question "Hoe do we heal?" - all voluntary participation
A second circle within the circle was convened of non-Natives (including the radio station)
We then broke into smaller groups with a representative of the radio station in each group and addressed the question, "How do we move forward?"
The radio station representatives then sat in the circle within a circle, reported out what they'd heard in their group and then described what they were prepared to do.
We closed the day with a circle and a question "What one word describes what you feel was accomplished today?"
It was a good process, it was a beginning. We've learned conversations are so powerful and have used them in the Aalska Native Community to deal with issues that matter to ur people. The conversations are modeled after Art of Hosting methodologies. I've attended an AoH session last fall and we brought up a team to Alaska for a week-long session with Alaska Native emerging leaders. It's definitely a role for our organization and one we hope to spread around our state.
