We are three MSc students in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability, currently conducting our thesis research on interior capacities that enable leaders to facilitate co-learning and co-creation in Strategic Sustainable Development. We aim to identify both key interior capacities, and ways in which facilitative leaders can develop those capacities, in order to shift people in an organization at identity and values level, giving rise to the deep will to act, and thus accelerating transformational change towards sustainability.
We are fortunate to be attending the ALIA Europe 2011 meeting as participant observer and are very keen to hear from any delegates that have an interest in this topic, and especially those who facilitate transformational change.
We are eager to get in touch with practitioners working with Theory U, authentic leadership (ALIA) and hosting approaches (Art of Hosting) for dialogue interviews to get a first-hand response from people in the field
If you would be interested in meeting up, perhaps you can drop us a line and we can find some time during the conference to meet for brief chat?
Kind regards,
Christopher Baan, Dana Pearlman, and Phil Long

Hi Christopher, Dana and Phil
Unfortunately I can't be at ALIA Europe this year, but I do try and live the questions and approaches you are investigating.
I would be happy to do a Skype interview with you and really interested to know what comes up for you as you do your research. My Masters dissertation wasn't a million miles from this space and I'd be happy to share that if it helped, albeit that it is a few years ago and things thankfully move on.

Good luck !

This sounds like a more rigorous version of an inquiry that we are also taking into the Summer Institute in Ohio, under the heading "Change for Good--What Does It Really Take?" We know about some of the tools (social technologies) that have been developed, but what is the mindset (interior capacity) that needs to be aligned with those tools? Even the word "tools" is from a mechanistic paradigm that suggests that if you have the right wrench for the right nut, it's just a matter of muscle power. But now we know that living systems, including social systems, are far more complex, fluid, energetic, and interconnected than we had first imagined.
It seems only natural to assume that the mind we bring to our challenges must also be in tune with this fluid, energetic dimension of systems. This takes a particular kind of training, which some of our contemplative traditions can shed light on. And I use the word training deliberately, in the sense that it requires ongoing, repeated letting go and reframing of habitual ways of seeing, knowing, and therefore acting, which we have assimilated as individuals and cultures.
So that's a little thought stream evoked by your invitation. Looking forward to seeing you at Mennorode!

We have for years employed an approach very close to Theory U, without having that framework to refer to. Thanks to Otto Scharmer, we now have the language to explain what we do (I had the fortune to hear him out at a workshop in Oslo last week.)
If you are interested in getting more information on our transformative work with major companies, primarily those based in Norway as we originate here, I am more than willing to share. We have a collaboration with a US consulting company too, that has a sustainability report which has been well received also at the UN. It is based on research with ten major US global corporations.
You may contact me at: steinar.almelid@vistra.no
And anyway, best of fortune with your work,
Steinar
