gretting to you all from Aotearoa New Zealand. Imagine my excitement when I finally located a copy of 'The Rules of Victory' in our public library today. Affordable book access is something of an issue in our part of the world, as is access to broadband. Am some months behind you all but have enjoyed scanning comments and getting an overview of the discussion questions and will start my reading and refection tonight.

Hi Susmita,
That was my experience as well. I gave up on trying to hear session 1. Session 2 was mostly possible, but I needed to listen very closely.

Here's a great interview with Frances Westley, Chair of Social Innovation Generation at the University of Waterloo in Canada, recorded at a 2008 global conference on "Building Resilience into Societies in Response to Dramatic Change."

Frances brings a bird's-eye view to social movements and systems change, why social projects are so hard to scale up, and the qualities of people who are successful social innovators. Especially towards the end, she gets into fascinating territory about releasing resource and power flows, surfing the avalanche of opportunity in moments when things open up, harnessing the energy of resistance and conflict for forward movement, and the need to become more whole (transform) oneself before it's possible to transform systems and apparent opponents. Lots of concrete examples.

Hey friends from our Book Club in HFX. Barry and I are in Washington DC preparing for our talk tomorrow to the Peace and Securities Studies program at the Walsh School of Diplomacy here at Georgetown. So we're deeply immersed in the material and will have a story or two to tell next class Nov 25.

Barry and I will post some questions later today, but most of the next class will be a discussion of that second chapter on View, Practice, and Action. It's a very helpful too in all of life, and part of The Five for assessing the ground of any campaign that the text gives us on page one.

The other part of the class will be to bring out in greater detail the particular scenarios in your lives that you'd like the Rules of Victory to help with, as well as perhaps a couple of case studies that we can all share in common. These will provide the "road" that we can test the "rubber" against as we get more deeply into the Sun Tzu's strategies. So perhaps you could all give that a thought until we meet again: a 1.5 minutes description of the scenario you'd like help with the most.

Barry and I very much enjoyed the discussion at the end of class, and we thought everyone following from afar would benefit from hearing your insights and questions. Will you take a minute and put down on this site what questions and thoughts were provoked last Thursday evening?

More soon, from DC...

reading 'the rules of victory' is a joyful activity for me at the moment. it sheds light and offers insight to the 'art of war'. it helps to make these elusive teachings more approachable & applicable. at this time i am an adult learner returning to university to complete my BA: my area of concentration is 'contemplative leadership'. this past week i've had to articulate what makes contemplative leadership different from other leadership~it's partly an academic exercise and also a personally fulfilling one as well. next mondy i have a meeting w. my academic advisory committee and plan to bring 'rules of victory' along and read excerpts from it to help give language to the 'elusive obvious'~
