Mark Szpakowski commented on Mark Szpakowski's blog post 'Why We Revolt - The Butterfly and the Boiling Point'
Hi Ria, when you respond to "what is the continuity that furthers?" with the question "Isn't that life itself, evolution itself?", here's how that comes home for me. I am holding, and being held by, life itself. But…

Here's a few follow-ups:   Wael Ghonim writes: Finally, in a North American context, here is Bob Herbert's final column for the New York Times, pointing out incisively and starkly how the USA is reaching its own boiling…

Susan Szpakowski commented on Mark Szpakowski's blog post 'Why We Revolt - The Butterfly and the Boiling Point'
Great article! Uncanny that she talks about the moment of suspension as being common to both revolutions and disasters.  "When a revolution is made, people suddenly find themselves in a changed state—of mind and of nation. The…

Why We Revolt - The Butterfly and the Boiling Point

How that butterfly effect happens, and who some of those butterflies were, in Tunisia, Egypt, but also Poland, Czechoslovakia, Wisconsin: a brilliant, passionate article by Rebecca Solnit, originally published in Tom Dispatch, and reprinted in Yes! (Powerful Ideas, Practical Actions). This…See More

Mark Szpakowski replied to Brian Landever's discussion 'Time Banking is Peace Building'
Brain, and others, I think the way to begin is to jump right in. The time banking website lets you set up a space for your local community's timebanking for free, for the first 20 users. The web site has facilities to help people connect their…

Mark Szpakowski commented on dorian baroni's blog post 'The Gulf of Mexico disaster and the journey of taking it personally'
Thank you Dorian for this post, and the burning quality of the questions you pose. And I also like the framing of the questions as held highly personally by "one preciously finite life force". That feels like a warrior's space, of…

Mark Szpakowski commented on Lianne Bridges's blog post 'Wisdom meets modern technology with a WOW!'
Hi Lianne, Amy Lenzo of the World Café community recounts the story of the Triple-World Café in a Fieldnotes article (mirroring the same article on the World Café community site). There's also a picture gallery. One…

Mark Szpakowski replied to ALIA Web Team's discussion 'Network Privacy Settings'
I'm not crazy about this move. I do understand the need to protect privacy, and to limit public visibility of individuals' profile information. And I can see the need to have some discussions be private or restricted - groups within the…

Mark Szpakowski replied to Brian Landever's discussion 'Brainstorming Local Currencies'
The redemption rate question seems a bit odd to me. The benefit of a local currency is in keeping it circulating locally, independently of the winds of global financial ill fortune. From that point of view the lower the redemption rate the lower.…

Shauntay Grant at the opening night dinner. She read a sweet story from a children's book and offered up beautiful, strong poetry. A moving presentation. (Lot's more photos will be posted to the Shambala Summer Institute Weblog soon.)See More

How Georg, welcome to this Alia community site! The question you pose is one that will, or should, be included in working out the design of how Alia dollars are used, both at this week-long event and after that, and both within the Alia community…

Internet Software Architect
Please share something about yourself, your work, and what draws you to the ALIA community.
I am a web software architect and developer. I see software as applied epistemology, sentience as composed of intelligence and care, and those combining to form systems of symbiotic care for our earth and for us, by us. The enabler is structural coupling of group attention to software’s call-by-future. That's where practices of authentic presence with self and others come in.

My focus is on software for society, through web systems for collaborating, learning, problem solving and caretaking.

I am also interested in the potential Second Life has for ALIA work. If you're in Second Life, IM Eos Amaterasu, or check out the Alia Institute group (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Commonwealth%20Island/108/234/36).

Online Games, Participatory Enacting & Story Making

I was tweeted to World Without Oil, a web page and video about an online game that simulated the first 32 weeks of a global oil crisis. People played out at least the motions of their responses in the real, not the virtual, world. They communicated through weblogs, videos, whatever medium - to tell the story of what they were doing. The motto:

play it - before you live it
As the video says, this was an… Continue
